In 2019 I was invited to participate in a 5-day walk to raise awareness about indefinite detention of asylum seekers in the UK, the only country in Western Europe that does not adhere to a strict limit on such detentions. Organized by the Gatwick Detainee Welfare Group and Refugee Tales, the walk brings together approximately 150 current and former Gatwick Detention Center volunteers and 20-30 former detainees, as well as other local and non-local supporters. Each day’s walk of about 12 miles takes place along a system of public rights of way that exist throughout the UK and which in many cases date back to medieval times. Each year’s route is different and is connected in some way to the history and contemporary issue of immigration in the UK. This body of photographs include images from the 2019 and 2022 walk as well as images related to immigration and detention in the UK more generally, all of which were taken from public rights of way.
